Day 179 – Let Hope Prevail
Today’s Reading: Proverbs 10 – 12
The hope of the righteous brings joy, but the expectation of the wicked will perish.
Proverbs 10:28
The sinful soul expects things to be a certain way: the customer should always be right, the grandparent should give up their time to take care of the grandchild, the government should provide for my needs, the neighbor should know my name….But the hopeful soul sows seeds of hope and produces Joy because they are willing to help in what they Hope for.
The hopeful person gives back because of all they’ve been given even if they have little. They help the waiter clean the table because they realize theirs not enough help, they volunteer to help their friend when they seek them struggling without expecting anything in return, they reach out when a situation is confusing to listen to the other side and find understanding, and they try to help their parent enjoy life because they gave so much of their life to raising them.
The hopeful person turns Expectations upside down. They come humbly into this world willing to help instead of expecting to be helped. They wash feet instead of waiting for their feet to be washed.
When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
John 13:12-17
Jesus our greatest example of Hope coming into this broken world ushered in Peace and Joy. He didn’t lord over anyone with expectations even though He was Lord. Jesus came to serve, to give Hope. Hope is witnessed when we serve because we are Hoping for a greater future by being willing to help it come to fruition.
