Day 44 – 365 Days through the Word

Day 44 – Reflections of the past bring strength for the future.

Todays Reading: Deuteronomy 1 – 5

Deuteronomy 4:9-10 “Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children— how on the day that you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, the Lord said to me, ‘Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children so.’

We have made it into Deuteronomy!

As I was reading this morning I was reminded how much I love this book. Moses is at the end of his journey and he is reflecting on all that God has done through him for the Israelites. He finally comes to the realization that God isn’t going to allow him go into and partake of the Promised Land. Although he begs the Lord to reconsider, God only allows him to see it from a distance on top of the mountain.

Moses begs the Israelites to remember all that God has done and to keep the commandments of the Lord. He tells them to teach their children and their children’s children so that no one forgets.

Moses last efforts are focused on preparing a new leader, Joshua, through encouragement for the work ahead.

God gives each of us these same glimpses into the future. He prepares us with reminders from our past. He never unfolds the full picture of the future so we won’t give up on the present. He wants us to learn from our past, to change from our mistakes, and to grow our children into the future leaders we need them to be.

Sometimes not seeing the future can make us think the present isn’t all it’s cut out to be, but if we use the past as a teacher it will lead us to be the leader for those little ones of the future.

Don’t give up on the work ahead just because you can’t see the future, know that in the end it’s all worth it because God’s already won the war and has been working on the perfect place for you.
